“My daughter had voice and guitar lessons here. She thoroughly enjoyed the style and pace of instruction. She is now using guitar in her profession as a music therapist. I also collaborated on a number of projects with the great folks here, from audition prep to participation in music coaching and rehearsals to working with them on a sold-out house concert there. 10/10 would 100% recommend Hickory Arts.”

“I have had the honor to be a student of violin with Andrea Jove as my instructor. She has been so patient, kind and encouraging that I find myself as addicted to her friendship as I am to her instruction. I highly recommend her as teacher for any age! As I am 66, it’s never too late to learn something new.”

“I can’t say enough great things about Jeff Hartman and Hickory Arts. My wife purchased a few introductory guitar lessons as a Christmas gift and now three years later I’m still going strong with weekly lessons! Plus they encourage all of their students to present house concerts for the public to attend and to give the students the experience of creating a set list, potentially working with other performers, and performing live for a paying crowd. I’ve done two of those and they are among the most rewarding experiences of my life. No kidding. Jeff lets me go at my own pace but also keeps me focused on my long term goals for improving my style, technique, and set list. I’m comfortable now playing at open mics, around the campfire, and for sing alongs during the holidays. If you’ve thought about starting or picking back up with an instrument or with vocal training, I hope you give them a call!”

“Highly recommend. Jeff is very personable, talented, and patient. He puts my goddaughter at ease with singing, which she loves to do. Her voice lessons with Jeff have helped her become more confident, and she has taken several opportunities to sing in public, something I do not think she would have done had she not been working with Jeff/Hickory Arts. Money well spent.”

“We love taking lessons at Hickory Arts with Jake. He has taught us so much and encourages us each week with our lessons. “My instructor is always prepared to teach me new things. He continually challenges me to improve my technique, increase my repertoire, and general knowledge of the various instruments I am learning to play. “Jake has been fantastic so far. We have only had two lessons, but my daughter has already opened up to him, and he helped us with a broken guitar string. My daughter was thrilled because it was the first one, and she was very upset. That was above and beyond his role as her teacher. We’ve been waiting a long time for Jake to get an opening, and I can already tell it was worth the wait.”

“I just wanted to reach out and thank you for all you taught me about guitar. For the music therapy program, we have to take two functional guitar classes. I’m finishing up the first one, and it has felt like a breeze thanks to you. I started practicum sessions this semester (at Hardin Park School with preschoolers with developmental delays) and have felt confident going into every session with my guitar- it’s really become my favorite instrument to play. I also wanted to say I was presented with such a cool opportunity yesterday. I was in University Singers, and we were rehearsing a song called Gloucestershire Wassail for the holiday scholarship concert tomorrow. It’s a great piece with lots of different instruments- bass, guitar, banjo, penny whistle, violin. The only instrumentalists at the rehearsal were the bassist and the banjo player. The banjo player, Rob McCormac, is, coincidentally, my form and analysis professor, who has seen me play guitar in his class before. They were down a guitarist, but Rob brought his guitar anyway. Rob spotted me in the room and asked if I could come up to play. I said sure, and we had a great time playing! All that to say, I’m actually playing with the band tomorrow night at the holiday scholarship concert! I’m pretty excited about it. Anyway, THANK YOU for our lessons together. If I hadn’t taken guitar, I don’t think I would’ve felt nearly as comfortable in guitar class, at my practicum site, or in a situation where somebody asked me to play on the fly.”

“I have had excellent experiences with Hickory Arts based on the professionalism of the staff, their knowledge and teaching skills, and most of all the feeling of family with this group of artists. They provide a wide array of instructional experiences, and I have progressed as an artist through working with them, notably in voice lessons but also from numerous informal collaborations with Jeff Hartman and his recording expertise. They develop talent by infusing skills through their expertise.”

“I took voice lessons from Jeff for about two years when I was in high school, and I can honestly say that he helped me find my voice. He was extremely patient, but also did not allow me to settle for anything less than my best. I would not have the confidence or ability to sing the way I do if it weren't for Jeff and all the countless hours he and I spent together at Hickory Arts. If you are looking for a place to hone your craft, look no further than Hickory Arts!”

“I have been saying for a long time how much I miss singing. I don't mean like what I do when I teach, but I can't even do that now. It's so bizarre that I have spent most of my life singing, and now I don't/can't. Last night, Samantha indulged me, and she pulled up guitar tabs, and we sang Fleetwood Mac, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Heart, Nickel Creek, and she sang Bruno Mars for me. It felt really good. I'm so proud of her. I envy her guitar-playing ability and am grateful she has had a good teacher to learn how! Jeff Hartman, thank you for teaching her. She rarely plays in front of me, and I am blown away at how good she has gotten!”

“We had the once-a-year all praise and worship chapel this morning at HCA, and I thought you would love to see Hickory Arts so well represented. I'm glad lessons are going well for Emma, and Luke said he really enjoyed meeting with you and is looking forward to lessons. I haven't thanked you lately, but we are so grateful for the support you have given to our family over the years. Caroline had another very successful year with Corey. Caroline was offered voice scholarships at UNC, UNCC, and Furman, and she ultimately decided to attend UNC Chapel Hill to pursue a BA in Vocal Music Performance and to complete their pre-med track. In March, she placed 3rd in the Schmidt Vocal Competition (winning $1500), and she made it to the second round of NATS Regionals. In April, she won the Edna Bost Barringer Young Artist Award (will receive it on May 22nd), and she was selected as a finalist for the Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship. She didn't win it, but she was extremely honored to make it to the final round. You, Carol Anne, and Hickory Arts have always been there to help with anything Caroline (or Cassidy) has needed, and we value your partnership in raising up Caroline and preparing her for a lifetime of loving the arts.”

"If I don't tell you this now, I'll forget by Tuesday, but I had a dream last night where I was coming to my lesson, and you had given it away to the guy who's playing the judge in Sweeney, and I walked out crying. A bit dramatic on my part, but I thought I'd just let you know how I feel about missing our lessons."

“Corey has been a delight to work with. Caroline feels so encouraged and exhilarated during and after their lessons. Corey told Caroline about the Schmidt Vocal Competition - Caroline participated and was selected as a finalist! The regional Schmidt Vocal Competition happened today at the UNC School of the Arts. In addition to receiving a $250 award for being chosen as a finalist, Caroline was given the Broadway Bound Encouragement Award. Caroline's favorite part of the day was being able to sit in on a master class with Cindy Oxberry, Nic Muni, and Rosemary Freni. She is pictured below with members of the Schmidt family after the awards were announced. Next weekend, Corey and Caroline travel to the NATS Regionals at UNC. Caroline will participate in both the classical and musical theatre categories. After today's competition, which had incredibly talented high schoolers, Caroline is even more excited about regionals. We are so thankful to Corey and to you, Jeff and Carol Anne, for all you have done to instruct, encourage, and support Caroline. Hickory Arts is making such a difference in this girl's life, allowing her to grow in confidence and ability while still enjoying every minute of the learning process. We appreciate you.”

“Thank you so much for everything Jeff has done for me. He is so nice and it was fun to work with him. I have improved on my singing so much. I always look forward to having my vocal lessons every week because I enjoyed it so much. I have discovered so much more in singing and my voice. I never knew as much about my voice than I do now. I went from a good voice and terrible songs to a good voice and great songs! I have improved so much over the months and I feel so great about my singing. Thank you so much. I appreciate everything you’ve done.”

“I'm one of the biggest perfectionists when it comes to my music. Even if no one else notices my mistakes, I always do. But recently I've come to accept the fact that I'm never going to sing perfectly each time, and that's still okay. Jeff Hartman always told me that there is beauty in imperfection, and it's taken me a while to believe that. However, once you do it will set you free.”

“Sending love to the extremely talented and best vocal coach out there, Jeff Hartman. Thank you so much for being patient with my indecisiveness, and pushing me outside of my comfort zone always. "Thanks again for all your help! You were a huge part in my song choice, confidence, and definitely my proper enunciation. You're awesome! I hope I didn't hurt Carol Anne with how hard I squeezed her neck in that post-win hug. I was just excited. It's still weird to me! “I was talking to one of my friends about the good and bad teachers I have had over the years. I have had a wide variety. Jeff’s name came up in the mix, and I realized I had never thanked him for all that he did. I know that this may seem strange, seeing as I took lessons from him for such a short period of time… but he instilled a good bit of confidence in my singing ability, and that confidence has improved my singing remarkably. So thank you for his encouragement, and I hope he continues to build up the students he teaches.”

“Jeff and Carol Anne! An amazing duo! They are the pros in this business of music and arts! My daughter Savannah has worked with Jeff for the past eleven years! ELEVEN YEARS! She has grown up knowing both Jeff and Carol Anne. Both serve her in the way of music training, vocal coaching, music production teaching, assisting in acting training, and musical theater training. Also, Jeff has helped with resume development and building. Carol Anne has photographed incredible pictures of Savvy and has captured her in various settings for multiple occasions and needs! She, too, like Jeff, is loaded with unbelievable talent in music and the arts. Both are people of high integrity and professionalism. Each will go out of their way to help their students, whom they treat as family. They go the extra mile to help and make things happen and assist in dreams coming true for my daughter, and I know this is true for all other students. We are very thankful that Jeff and Carol Anne have been a part of Savannah‘s life as she has grown from an 11-year-old to now a 22-year-old adult who has been able to maximize the gifts. God has given her and used her talent to the fullest with the help of Jeff, Carol Anne, and Hickory Arts! They are truly a blessing and continue to be a blessing in her life. She has continued to work with them to this day, December 8th, 2023. We thank God for Jeff and Hickory Arts!”

“I have had the privilege to work in various capacities at Hickory Arts: as an actor working with Jeff, John, and Carol Anne, giving a gift of a photography session with Carol Anne to a friend, and as a parent of a middle and high school guitar student. The professionalism shown in every experience was exceptional. Jeff, John, and Carol Anne are consummate professionals and have the “Midas touch” when it comes to all things theatre. Carol Anne’s photos are stunning, and my daughter showed outstanding growth in her guitar lessons and still plays well to this day. Choose Hickory Arts! You won’t regret it.”

"I wanted to give a big shout-out to my friends at Hickory Arts — well, actually, they’re more like family. I’ve been training with Jeff for about six years now. In December, I had my first house concert with them, which was so special because I love Christmas and Christmas music. I am so thankful for Jeff and Carol Anne Hartman and all their instructors for creating such a wonderful space for artists to grow, song-write, record, and learn techniques for singing, acting, and playing instruments. If you are able to support the arts financially, please go donate to them right now."

"Hickory Arts has truly been an essential part of my life. There's no way for me to fully express what this studio has meant to me. I've worked with Jeff Hartman since I was 15 years old. That means I have had the honor of working with him for over 11 years now. Jeff very quickly became so much more than a teacher. He has been a mentor, a friend, a therapist, and, more than anything, he is family. Please consider donating to this wonderful studio. I truly don't know where I would be without Hickory Arts being a part of my life. As someone who has greatly battled with anxiety and depression, there have been many times where the studio and Jeff have saved my life. I am beyond thankful. The arts are essential. Thank you for taking the time to read this and, again, anything you could possibly donate would be greatly appreciated."

“Sooo... I feel really mushy gushy and have to tell you that I miss you. A ton. I miss laughing and creating with you... But working with you was better for me than I ever could have imagined. I got the courage to explore things outside of theater and truly become and everything artist. You also taught me that loving myself and the people dear to me is most important. You are kind, considerate, and so generous. Meeting and working with you have been some of the best points thus far in my creative career... "The first day Jeff and I met to work on a project—I'll never forget it—and I forget everything! I sang my little ditty to him and then I was transformed into a little kid at a magic show (This kind of thing happened over and over). To watch and hear Jeff Hartman take one of my little melodies and turn it into a real, full-blown song is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Working on this show with him has been the most amazing creative experience I've ever had. The freedom to try anything, go in any direction, with no fear—well, that's what we had working on these songs. That kind of environment is an artist's utopia and just being with Jeff somehow makes you be bolder smarter and funnier; he really ups your game. So, basically, working with Jeff Hartman is like working with a cheerleading, magical, celestial being.”

“I just want to thank Jeff for who he is to me and how he made me feel the moment I walked in to his studio. For the first time, I felt like someone truly believed in me and really thought I was talented. He made me feel unique. Every week that I came there, I left feeling and believing I could do this. I could do what my artist heart and mind longs and hungers to do and be. I gained confidence and belief and more passion. He was the first person that allowed me to feel that about my creative side. He is an amazing individual and has had a great impact that I will never forget for my creative self-worth. Thank you for seeing me. You’ve seen my true self and who I really was, maybe even before I believed in it and could see it. I am figuring out who I really am as a person, now, and will not let little things steer me away or hide that anymore. I truly thank Jeff for what he did, the words he spoke and the passion he had for me when I was with him. It will always mean something to me and is the spark I go back to every time I want to pick up the pen to write/sing. Thank you, Jeff Hartman, for being a huge impact on my creative self-worth.”

“I hate our time working together came to an end. I had an incredible experience taking lessons from Jeff and I’m so thankful I had him to guide me in the right direction. Thank you for challenging me and for believing in me and my talent. He taught me the true meaning of being an artist. He showed me that being different is a wonderful thing and he accepted my choices as an artist and as a person. He invested in me and taught me it’s totally okay to sing like a soul sister. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m not sure he will ever know how much he means to me or how thankful I am to have had the opportunity to work with him. I wish Jeff and Carol Anne the best of luck. I hope you will come see me in shows at Catawba and I hope we can stay in touch. This isn’t goodbye, just see you soon. Thank you.”

“I must confess I have been putting off writing this letter for a while. As I sit here contemplating what words to put on the page, I am struggling to adequately articulate my feelings. For one who rarely runs out of things to say, I find myself stumbling to convey the thoughts of my heart. I am speechless. Why is it when I so desperately want to communicate, my mind seems to draw a blank? Scattered phrases come together, but my thoughts are incomplete and inadequate. This is my meager attempt to convey my indebtedness to God for placing you in my life. How could we ever thank a teacher for the mark they’ve made on us? No words, though dripping with eloquence, could adequately convey the depth of our gratitude for their influence on our lives. How could we ever repay them for this priceless gift: giving of themselves to guide us toward becoming the best possible version of ourselves? Like a master craftsman, they see the beauty of a raw and unfinished piece and dedicate their time and energy into seeing it perfected. They carefully shape a part of the masterpiece we become. We are all walking galleries displaying the work of the teachers who are so indelibly written on our hearts. On rare occasion, these master artisans move beyond the position of teacher and mentor and take on a new title: friend. This beautiful display is rarely made manifest for out of the small handful of truly exceptional teachers, only a choice few are willing to give the time, honesty and vulnerability it takes to attain friendship. I’m not sure at what instant Jeff Hartman transformed from being my teacher to friend. Who would have guessed that a music teacher could have so much influence on your life? I remember starting out with Jeff and being his student, but the memory becomes a bit foggier when I try to think about the moment I didn’t feel like a student. Perhaps it was the first time I talked to him the whole lesson and he didn’t mind that we skipped all our music work. Perhaps it was the time he first shared part of his story with me. Perhaps it was the time he trusted me enough to watch his boys. I can’t quite put my finger on when it began, but I am so thankful and honored to have him as my friend. There are so many life lessons I have learned from watching his interactions with those around him and hearing his story. It would be hard to list out everything I have seen, and we don’t have time to go into all the memories I could describe. Words can rarely give justice to expressions of the heart. However, I do want to share a few of the numerous things I so admire in Jeff. Jeff has an amazing ability to empathize with others. He genuinely cares about people and feel for/with them. People know that he is there for them, that he accepts them as they are. Though I think people may often take advantage of this fact, I so admire this quality in him. It is probably also one of the things that makes Jeff such a great actor… he is able to hurt, love, care, feel deeply. I have rarely found someone who is so gifted in the art of encouragement. Somehow he can always find an honest compliment for those around him. I have so much to learn from him in this area. He can hear a completely off-pitch song, all the while smiling at the student, and still authentically compliment their performance. I just sit there baffled at your ability to see the positive—the half-filled glass. Listening is a skill few attain and even fewer master. Jeff seems to have done both. Jeff not only hears the words others speak, but he is engaged in the conversation. I think I can talk to him (and probably have at some point) about almost anything. It’s nice to be able to quit the act we seem to put on for so many others. I feel like I am able to be myself, to say something stupid, to communicate my heart—I am free to be me. As an artist, it seems I am used to being on the outside a bit, sort of an oddball if you will. Often people do not understand my thinking and sometimes my feelings are too much for some to handle. It is nice to feel like I fit, to have a place of belonging. I like that Jeff makes creative cool. I admire Jeff’s humility in teaching. As an actor, I’m not sure how you cut off enjoying being the center of attention. Jeff is able to ham it up on stage but also direct all attention from himself when teaching. I have much to learn from him in this as well. He genuinely desires for his students to succeed and wants them to get all the glory. I tend to be much less selfless in my teaching. I don’t know how you continue so graciously with so little thanks from those you pour into. We students are so often a selfish, thankless bunch and yet Jeff authentically cares about us. My mind can’t quite wrap around that one. Finally, I admire Jeff’s sacrifice on behalf of those around him. He is not a starving artist for lack of job opportunities or talent. I think he fits the starving artist mold because he would probably starve himself to get things done on behalf of others. I can’t believe how many times I have come in to him relentlessly working on anything and everything for his students. Jeff seems to lose track of time in that room and acknowledge that he hasn’t eaten all day. I think he would help others attain their dreams even if it meant sacrificing his own. I hope that his students will recognize this in him and remember him when they succeed. Jeff was the one who saw the faint glimmer of light and enabled it to brilliantly shine. I hope the refined gems leaving his tutelage remember their days as diamonds in the rough. Jeff, I am so blessed to have you in my life. To echo Paul, ‘I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.’ So much of who I am today is because of your influence. I consider you my brother. Thank you for believing in me even in the times I didn’t believe in myself. Your support has instilled within me so much confidence. Thank you for allowing me to hear your story, grow to love your family and see you in so many different contexts. I am forever changed by your impact and indebted for your sacrifice. When I become an iconic rapper, you will not be forgotten.”

“I wanted to thank Jeff again for all that he has done for me. I got a perfect score on my senior project. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him. His time and effort to help me are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for helping me complete a huge task in my high school education. I’d like to stay in touch with you if possible, and I also would love to help you with anything you need at your studio.”

“Just wanted to take a moment to let you know how very much I enjoyed the songwriting class today. I'm so glad you encouraged me to attend. I'm really looking forward to learning how to improvise more than ever, now, and with some lessons from you it doesn't seem impossible anymore. After all, you are a master at it! By the way, your wife is one of the most lovely ladies I've ever met.”

"As Ruth said to Naomi, ‘Wherever you go, we go!’ (Ruth 1:16) Seriously. Jeff is amazing! I can’t tell you how much he means to Lauren. He knows her style and ability better than anybody. When we began lessons with him, we found a friend for life. We have been talking about trying to find someone who can really help start putting Brooke and Lauren together. That someone is Jeff! The girls can not do this without him. He would never be competing for the girls’ attention. He is their primary source of instruction. I want their time with Jeff to be focused on producing, recording—implementing their music. Jeff & Carol Anne rock my socks and flip my flops! Brooke feels Jeff is the only person who really ‘gets’ her and helps her to understand what she is trying to accomplish and then can turn around and teach her how to achieve it. We love him! I understand completely where he stands and agrees with his philosophies! We are to be set apart. Maybe he has had others who could just walk out of his lives, but there are just people worth fighting for. Just suffice to know we love Jeff, pray for him and care deeply for his family."

“One of my favorite plays to have worked on at Hickory Theatre was Macbeth. It was a delight. I didn’t do it, but I arranged the pieces to be done. I love what Jeff Hartman did with the projections. The projections were done in an offset setup, so part of the projection would be captured down stage and the rest of the projection would be captured up stage. It would be on these strips of fabric, so it would flow, which was really a lot of fun. The projections were of the king talking and other elements of the show that had been filmed.”

“I have always recognized, appreciated, and supported your many talents, but even I was blown away by your creativity, wit, and beautiful lyrics in "Junk!” I had to hobble to the theatre on my walker to see the show Sunday afternoon (hip surgery this week), but it was more than worth it to see yours and Molly Bass's play come to life on stage! I wish every young person, or any person for that matter, could see your play. It is a delight to experience. I'm sorry I didn't get to see you there, but know how much I loved seeing your work on stage again. Please keep writing, performing, and making the world a happier place. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent and especially for teaching younger kids how to develop their own. You're amazing!”

“I had the opportunity to speak to Carol after "Waitress" last night, but didn't get to see you. I just want to tell you how I continue to be impressed with and proud of you for the fine, consistent, excellent quality of work that you present. You have always been a fine actor and singer, and you are such a professional musician, as a player, as a performer, as a director, in all regards. "Waitress" is so good, the staging, the tech, the set, the acting, but right there at the forefront is the music in every aspect, you, the orchestra, the vocals of the performers, everything! Please convey my best regards to the entire cast for a job so well done. You really are a consummate artist, and I admire your depth of abilities, a true Renaissance man! I have thought of you and Carol so much since the tragic, senseless loss of your son, and I feel so inadequate even trying to offer anything. But please know this. Coble would be very proud of you for continuing to persevere on his behalf, and you do him honor. You do make a difference in our community.”

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical was just a great show! Your team should do a master class on pre-promotion and community awareness of a production. Carol Anne was flawless (as usual), and Holley was just spot on magnificent. Folks don’t think about the band when they see the performers, costumes, and sets, but musically, you and the musicians really delivered! We had a lovely evening. I could go on all day, but congratulations on the sellouts and a wonderful show. From start to finish it was beautiful.”

“I saw your magnificent performance last Friday night. Every aspect of the show was top-notch: singing, harmonizing, orchestra, staging, set design and management, costumes, wigs, tech, etc. I will not single anyone out, because It would take forever, and I also do not want to leave anyone out. It was great ensemble theatre, well cast and well delivered. I am proud of all of you. What a tremendous gift you offer your audiences. I have sent out an email to a list of some 400 of my actors, musicians, and patrons, espousing the excellent quality of your show! The one person I will single out is Jeff for overseeing this fantastic production. (And Paul David for his hair!) Again, thanks for the honor of getting to see this wondrous show!”

“Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! My friends and I were fortunate enough to experience the opening night of "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical" at The Green Room in Newton, NC. It was indeed beautiful in every way. The music, the actors, the staging, and the amazing talent could rival any Broadway show ever produced! The show features vocalists and musicians that bring the characters to life. Everyone in the Unifour area and beyond must see this magnificent show! Our own local Carol Anne Hartman is "beautiful" in her own right, but she embodies Carole King on the stage, and her vocals are impeccable. Logan Kirkpatrick as Neil Sedaka is spot on, and Corey Knighton nails the emotionally erratic character of Gerry Goffin, as he makes the audience love and hate him at the same time. Jordan Randall, Jadon Cummings, Jairo Pereira, and Preston Smith delight everyone as The Drifters. The duo of Holley Dagenhardt and Lucas DeVore offer flawless vocals and the perfect on-stage chemistry. Angelique James, Ashley Robinson, LaTavia Ross, and Trin Taylor make The Shirelles come to life, and their gorgeous outfits hail the 60s. If you love that low bass blended with that high tenor of The Righteous Brothers, you'll love the voices of Logan Kirkpatrick and Paul David Kurts. Kudos to the entire cast and crew, but a standing ovation goes to the show's director and musical director, Jeff Hartman, who is beyond compare. The show will be staged for only eight more performances, and ticket prices are the least expensive in the region. There's no reason why anyone should miss the show. There's something in the show for people of all ages and all musical tastes. Order your tickets today to see one of the best shows ever!”

“My name is Mandy Pearce, and I am a local business owner who has lived and worked in Catawba County for almost 20 years. Jeff is not only a well-connected and highly capable artist, he has directed, acted, run a successful business in the art field, and built relationships in and around Catawba County, the state, and region. Jeff is accomplished in his own right as an artist, trains other highly successful artists, and collaborates well with others in the field. Jeff’s passion for bringing amazing arts experiences to Catawba County is well-known. Not only does he have support from his family, who are also heavily involved in the arts, but Jeff has support from many community theater supporters in the area. I see endless possibilities for our area with Jeff on board with a highly visible arts organization in Catawba County, who has a team of wonderful advocates for diversity, opportunity, innovation, and collaboration. Jeff not only knows what has come to this area, what we are missing, what the audience here craves, but he has traveled and experienced many theaters at local, state, and national levels. Jeff is constantly educating himself on up-and-coming content, tried and true opportunities, and how to bring a fresh perspective to the all-time favorites as well. I hope you will see the gem we have in Jeff Hartman. It is hard to find a qualified person for a lot of positions in the community who also have knowledge, training, experience, history of success, AND know the community personally and professionally. Jeff checks all these boxes.”

“I have known Jeff since his high school days. He was a student in one of my math classes at West Caldwell High School and was just a delight to have in class. He was always prepared and did quite well. The one thing I did notice most about Jeff was his creativity and commitment to the arts. He is a versatile musician and is involved in so many creative endeavors. He has been a fixture on the performing arts scene here in Hickory and worked very closely with the Hickory Community Theatre in past performances. He has a genuine care in working well with others, especially young performers in so many different ways. With his skills, excellent demeanor, and creativity, I give him my highest recommendation.”

“Wow! What a wonderful night of theatre with two of my all-time favorite Image Players! DT, Director, and Jeff Hartman, Musical Director, joined to stage "Bright Star," a beautiful, thought-provoking production that warms the heart. Carol Anne Hartman, Jeff's wife, is stellar in the lead, and her supporting cast is remarkable. The Green Room is a perfect theatre for sound, comfort, and staging, and audiences will be thrilled with this show. DT has directed his cast to be believable and relatable, while Jeff has taken a musical score that is plaintive and challenging and turned his actors into vocalists and musicians themselves. Jeff is not only the Musical Director, but he is also an accomplished musician himself, showcasing his playing keyboard, guitar, and harmonica. If you haven't seen the show, please order your ticket today for the final performances on September 20, 21, and 22 at The Green Room in Newton, NC. I have seen many shows at The Green Room in Newton and many of them rival Broadway! We can all be proud of this theatre and give it our support. DT, Jeff, cast, and crew - BRAVO!”

“Having been out of the country since May 4th, I am one of the few people in Hickory who hadn't seen Les Mis until last night. And all the word of mouth, I found, was right. It is a marvelous production with all involved in top form. Leading the way for all, were you and Carol Anne. Your performances were of the highest order. Polished and sincere. “I visited Hickory Arts today and saw in person what they are all about… finally! Nothing better than seeing in person. A nice house on 2nd Avenue SW, in the 700 block, which means it’s between 6th Street and 8th Street… easy. Nice space in the center for ‘House Concerts’ and four rooms with large glass windows which have been turned into teaching studios… piano, guitar, drums… Owners Carol Anne Hartman and Jeff Hartman are two REALLY TALENTED PEOPLE! Carol Anne was taking free photos (she’s a wonderful photographer). Jeff took me on a ‘tour’ of their new space. I’ll be doing some recording there with Jeff… backup music for a couple of vocals I’m doing. The arts in Hickory just continue to thrive thanks to people like Carol Anne and Jeff and their creative endeavors. Thanks, my friends, for opening your studio and giving us a chance to see and understand what you are doing. A great addition to Hickory!”

“I know from having had the enormous pleasure of working with you many times that you have no personal agenda other than to help foster and promote creative and performing arts by nurturing the interest of any and all with whom you work. I have learned so much from you every single time I have worked with you, even if it's just been playing for auditions. Even when you were in the cast, and I was playing, you would willingly help me with any musical questions I had (and there were many - you know how I prefer an acoustic piano!). You have done an amazing job with everything you have been involved in (although I will always have a fond spot for your dress from “The Producers"), and your musical skills still amaze me!”

“I keep up with you via mostly your newsletter and word on the street. I really like the two things you wrote. You have performed feats of amazement. The very fact you grew up and out when the rest of the music world basically sucked down and in (I know, I never said I was a lyricist) is an achievement in itself. I get to work with different groups and individuals pretty much on a daily basis, but you've displayed talents and skills here that I rarely get to see. I know that surely sometimes you asks yourself, ‘Damn, why am I doing this,’ especially when things get crazy with bandmates or bookings get screwed up. But that comes with the territory. Just keep up the good work. I believe in you and really think you have more good things coming. Most of my career has been involved with different aspects of ‘making it,’ getting close, but not quite there. So, for those of us who haven’t ‘made it,’ (yet!), we pass the torch on to someone who I believe will. The second part reminds me of what the music used to be like back in the ’60s and ’70s. There was this kind of spirit in the air that said ‘new things, thoughts and ideas’ and ‘new feelings.’ It was like, everywhere. There was this excitement of discovery as well as people sharing all of this. We used to get a new album, which we usually had to wait for and it seemed like forever, but we would get together at someone’s house, usually whoever had the newest needle on their turntable and a great sounding system, and listen. Over and over we would talk about all the parts and what the songs meant. It was such a wonderful time. I just hope that through my work, someone else can experience that the way I did.”
