Nigel Bottom

Oh—is that your folio?Shakespeare, Something Rotten!

Branden Nuhfer

Nigel Bottom, played by Branden Nuhfer, is the troupe’s primary writer, and there’s little doubt that his talent rivals and perhaps outshines Shakespeare’s. Nigel is very sensitive, so when he meets Portia, he falls fast. The younger of the two brothers, Nigel has two great passions – to love and write about it. Nigel is the only major character in Something Rotten! not based on an existing Shakespeare character, excluding the bard himself.

Nigel’s character is a metaphor for the Shakespeare authorship question that is the argument that he stole ideas or someone other than William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon wrote the works attributed to him. Although the idea has attracted much public interest, all but a few Shakespeare scholars and literary historians consider it a fringe theory, and for the most part, acknowledge it only to rebut or disparage the claims.

Branden Nuhfer was last seen at Hickory Theatre as Margaret Mead in Hair and Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid at The Green Room.
